Tips for high pollen levels

  • When levels are high, keep windows closed, especially in the morning and early afternoon.
  • After time outdoors, shower and change clothes so you do not carry pollen indoors.
  • Air the rooms after rain or late in the evening, when there is less pollen in the air.
  • Use a pollen filter in the car and keep the windows closed.
  • At the peak of the season, dry laundry indoors rather than outside.
  • For persistent or severe symptoms, seek medical or allergy advice.

Allergens and their seasons

Ragweed

Szezon: July–October (peak: August–September)

Hungary's most significant allergen. Even low concentrations cause strong symptoms: sneezing, a runny nose, itchy eyes and throat.

Grasses

Szezon: May–August

The main cause of early-summer hay fever. Freshly cut grass and flowering meadows trigger symptoms in many people.

Birch

Szezon: March–May

One of the strongest spring tree pollens. It often cross-reacts with certain fruits such as apple and peach.

Alder

Szezon: January–April

One of the earliest spring pollens; it can appear as early as late winter. In mild winters its season starts sooner.

Mugwort

Szezon: July–September

It flowers around the same time as ragweed and often affects sensitive people alongside it in late summer.

Olive

Szezon: April–June

Rare in Hungary; measurable amounts occur mainly in the warmer southern areas.
